Medical Misogyny

There’s lots of coverage of this in the news this week, which has prompted me to share some of my story and experience with you.

My diagnosis of adenomyosis wasn't received until my womb was outside of me on a plate. Quite literally.

At least it explained some of the heavy bleeding and excruciating pain I had experienced.

My menstrual cycle floored me many times. My experience was that no help was available. My approach was to cover it up and carry on as much as I could with no-one noticing - that seemed to me to be what all women did.

The dietary advice I received for #gestationaldiabetes when I was pregnant was to eat malt loaf and scones when I fancied something sweet.

The advice I received for prediabetes a few years later was to 'follow a Mediterranean diet' - and that was it.

The advice I received for and exacerbated IBS symptoms with each period - I didn't know this was a 'thing' and didn't mention it.

The advice I received for PCOS was to medicate and that that was my only choice.

The advice I received for PMDD - there was none.

My hysterectomy? That was advised by a private consultant.

My HRT now that I have no ovaries? My NHS GP currently requests adjustments to my prescriptions are made by a private consultant due to licensing laws - irrespective of my medical circumstance and symptoms.

My osteopenia ? Thought to result from low oestradiol levels over a prolonged period - this was detected and corrected via private medicine, no help was available on the NHS because I hadn't yet fractured.

Is it any wonder that I ended up qualifying as a nutrition consultant en-route to supporting my own physical and emotional health and wellbeing…?! It is so hard to find the support you need, and the information you want.

In my experience, women's health is a complex and multi-faceted healthcare topic that UK GPs and most of the NHS are well behind the curve on.

Treatment options and information often have to be sought privately and so are not available to everyone.

More research, more knowledge, and more education is needed.
